Human Experience

I was clicking around my LinkedIn, and stumbled across this video of Joe Tudor baring all on his experience of Depression. I always say to my clients there is no “one size fits all” experience when it comes to feeling the feelings. Everyone’s experience is their own. I thought hearing Joe Tudor’s experience was incredibly powerful as it took you there. He’s a great storyteller and you felt it with him.

I also thought the message was a significant one when contemplating how we see or define mental health difficulties. I think the word disease has such negative connotations that could bring about feelings of shame or guilt and might prevent people from getting help. Yet, on the other hand, I think it can be helpful to see mental health challenges, for example, addiction, as a symptom or a disease, because it can separate the person from the label, which can be crucial in therapy and treatment.
